Congress has extended the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (Autism CARES) Act for another five years. This decision will allocate $1.95 billion to initiatives in autism research, early detection, and intervention.
The reauthorization of the Autism CARES Act ensures nearly $2 billion in federal funding will be directed toward research, early detection, prevalence tracking, screening, professional training, intervention services, and other related government activities.
Sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), the bill received overwhelming bipartisan support. "The reauthorized legislation brings forth critical updates and new initiatives," said a spokesperson for the initiative.
Key provisions include an expanded research focus on aging and autism, greater inclusivity in research to reflect diverse needs and address healthcare disparities. Workforce development is also a priority with strategies to expand the developmental-behavioral pediatrician workforce.
The Autism Intervention Research Network for Communication Needs (AIR-C) aims to improve support for non-speaking autistic individuals. A technical assistance program will provide resources and training to enhance access to evidence-based services. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is directed to develop a report on mental health challenges faced by autistic individuals.
Additionally, NIH Autism Centers of Excellence will increase research networks dedicated to autism. A professional judgment budget mandates a strategic plan outlining future research directions and funding needs.
Experts have praised the act as crucial for advancing research and expanding services for individuals with autism. The legislation strengthens federal investment in autism-related programs.
