Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), Co-Chair of the House Pro-Life Caucus, issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, expressing disappointment over the decision.
“The Supreme Court’s failure to recognize the standing of the brave doctors who care for the women and girls harmed by the FDA’s unlawful removal of safety regulations for the drug mifepristone is deeply disappointing,” Smith stated.
Smith praised the efforts of the Alliance Defending Freedom in representing physicians but emphasized that despite the Court's decision not to consider the case at this time, efforts to ensure transparent care continue. He noted that states such as Idaho, Kansas, and Missouri have already sought to challenge what he termed as "the FDA’s malpractice."
“In addition to killing an unborn child by starving the baby to death—an outrage in and of itself—the chemical abortion regimen presents significant health risks to pregnant women, which the FDA has recklessly and shamefully ignored,” Smith added.
Smith cited data from the FDA's label on mifepristone, stating that 1 out of 25 women who take mifepristone will need emergency care. He suggested that actual numbers could be higher due to what he described as inadequate safety data collection by the FDA while making claims about mifepristone's safety.
“Beginning with President Clinton, the FDA—supposedly our gatekeeper for drug safety—has actively promoted the abortion poison/baby starvation pill and has failed to strictly adhere to its own testing protocols,” Smith said. “The FDA must be held accountable for enabling the abortion industry to prey on women and girls during their most vulnerable moments of need.”
