Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey's 4th Congressional District has been honored with the Congressional Steward of the Dream Award for his efforts in stomach cancer research. The award was presented by Debbie’s Dream Foundation at an event on Capitol Hill on February 26.

Melani Vincelli, leader of the New Jersey South Chapter of Debbie’s Dream Foundation, expressed gratitude to Smith: “I cannot thank you enough for your years of advocacy for stomach cancer research.” Vincelli, a 16-year survivor and advocate from Brick, NJ, highlighted Smith's support as crucial for stories like hers.

Smith acknowledged the foundation's dedication to advancing research. He addressed over 150 members of the organization, saying, “I want to thank you for your tireless efforts to secure critical research to help combat this unforgiving and swift-moving cancer.”

Stomach cancer is notably under-researched despite being the fourth most common cancer in men and seventh among women. Smith emphasized the need for further investigation into risk factors and increasing diagnoses among young people.

Debbie’s Dream Foundation was founded by Debbie Zelman in 2009 after her Stage IV stomach cancer diagnosis. The organization focuses on advocacy, support, and education regarding stomach cancer.

The survival rate for stomach cancer remains low at 36 percent over five years. In 2025 alone, it is estimated that 30,300 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer and 10,780 will die from it.

Smith has also drawn attention to the prevalence of stomach cancer among veterans and active-duty service members. Research indicates a significant portion of US veterans may be at risk due to chronic infections from Heliobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is linked to most stomach cancers.

In honor of his father who succumbed to stomach cancer, Smith has advocated for maintaining funding under the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) at the Department of Defense. This program aims to understand risk factors and prevent tumor development.

“I am committed to working with you all to ensure that PRCRP receives continued federal support,” Smith added.
