Congressional hearing to address human rights violations in Nigeria

U.S. Representative Chris Smith from New Jersey will preside over a congressional hearing concerning human rights issues in Nigeria. As the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Africa subcommittee, Rep. Smith is set to address whether Nigeria should be labeled as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S. State Department.

The hearing, titled "Conflict and Persecution in Nigeria: The Case for a CPC Designation," will include testimony from various experts and officials. Among those scheduled to speak are Nina Shea, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Religious Freedom at the Hudson Institute; Tony Perkins, Former Chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom; Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Makurdi in Nigeria; and Oge Onubogu, Director of the Africa Program at The Wilson Center.

This event is planned for Wednesday, March 12 at 9 a.m., taking place in Room 2200 on the second floor of the Rayburn House Office Building.
