In a recent development, Representative Chris Smith from New Jersey has raised concerns regarding the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's (BOEM) actions related to offshore wind projects. In a letter addressed to BOEM, Rep. Smith questioned the agency's decision to proceed with the approval process for planned offshore wind projects despite an executive order issued by President Trump on January 20th.
The executive order called for a pause and comprehensive review of the entire offshore wind approval process. However, BOEM announced on January 15th that it would begin preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Vineyard Mid-Atlantic offshore wind project and hold public meetings related to it. This move appears contrary to President Trump's directive, which highlights "potential inadequacies in various environmental reviews."
Rep. Smith expressed his concerns stating, “Given President Trump’s January 20th Executive Order, I wish to confirm that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) does not intend to continue with the already questionable approval process for proposed offshore wind projects until or if the pause is released.”
He further added, “In the interim, it would seem to reason that BOEM will stop any action related to the Environmental Impact Statement for the Vineyard Mid-Atlantic project off the coast of New Jersey. Similarly, the order appears to indicate the scheduled public meetings on the project set for February 6, 11, and 19 should be cancelled. Does BOEM intend to make this change and if so, how and when will the public be notified?”
Smith has been vocal about what he perceives as a lack of thorough scrutiny and proper environmental vetting in these projects. He has also led efforts seeking answers from the Biden Administration regarding offshore wind initiatives. In July 2023, legislation introduced by Smith was passed by the House of Representatives requiring presidential certification that offshore wind projects do not compromise radar capabilities essential for national defense.
Smith has previously endorsed President Trump’s executive order on offshore wind and remains committed to ensuring more rigorous examination of such projects.
