Rep. Chris Smith has introduced a new bill aimed at empowering state law enforcement to tackle unlawful drone activities in New Jersey. The proposed legislation, named the Law Against Nefarious Drones, Enforcement, Deconfliction (LANDED) Act, was prompted by requests from Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden and Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy. These sheriffs have expressed concerns over illegal drone activities amid unusual sightings across the state.

Smith emphasized the urgency of this legislation, citing that current laws restrict law enforcement's ability to take decisive action against these drones. "As swarms of unidentified drones have violated our airspace over the past month, our state law enforcement leaders have been precluded by law from taking more decisive action," he stated.

The congressman highlighted gaps in existing capabilities to counter unlawful drones and stressed the need for enhanced authorities and training for officers. "We need to ensure that law enforcement has the authorities, training, and capabilities to take quick action if needed to keep local residents safe," Smith said.

He also criticized what he perceives as inadequate response from the Biden Administration regarding these drone activities. "Regrettably, the Biden Administration not only has refused to take decisive action but also has been denying and downplaying the situation," Smith remarked.

Smith underscored his concerns about public safety: "New Jersey residents should not have to live in fear while unidentified drones continue to fly over our critical infrastructure."
