Rep. Chris Smith, representing Manchester, is visiting Long Beach Island with Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy to address recent unidentified drone activity in New Jersey. Sheriff Mastronardy has been leading efforts to investigate the source and potential risks of these drones reported over the past few days.

Smith released a statement expressing his concerns: “I have been speaking with Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden, and national security officials located in the area to discuss the widespread reports of unidentified drone activity across my central New Jersey congressional district and across our state."

He emphasized the alarm among residents due to this recurring phenomenon and criticized the insufficient response from state and federal agencies. "Understandably, New Jersey residents are very alarmed at this significant and reoccurring phenomenon—and the tepid response from our state and federal agencies so far is totally unacceptable," he stated. Smith drew parallels with last year's Chinese spy balloon incident, highlighting ongoing threats to national security.

Smith stressed the need for improved communication between local law enforcement and federal partners as unmanned aerial systems become more common. "While the source of this drone activity is still to be determined, it is clear that the communication channels and proper authorities among local law enforcement and federal partners must be drastically improved," he said.

He called for immediate action from state and federal agencies: "The people of New Jersey deserve swift and bold action on the part of our state and federal agencies to investigate, assess, and address the situation immediately."

Smith also mentioned his inquiries to various federal agencies following briefings by key officials over the past week. He committed to continuing efforts until comprehensive answers are provided: "I will continue working around the clock to ensure law enforcement has all the tools and authorities necessary...until New Jersey residents have the comprehensive answers they deserve.”
