Rep. Chris Smith, a long-serving advocate for veterans, has introduced legislation to name a new clinic in Toms River after Second Lieutenant Leonard G. "Bud" Lomell, Jr., a World War II hero and longtime resident of the area. The bill, known as HR 9997, is cosponsored by Reps. Donald Norcross, Jeff Van Drew, and Andy Kim.
"A decorated war hero and upstanding citizen, Bud Lomell sacrificed so much for our country and courageously led his platoon during the D-Day invasion of Normandy," stated Smith. Lomell was awarded several military honors including a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star for his service.
Smith emphasized the significance of naming the new healthcare facility after Lomell: "It is only fitting that the new modern health care facility in Toms River that will serve so many of our Nation’s heroes living in our community be named after one of our very own heroes from Ocean County."
The proposal has garnered support from Lomell's family, including his wife Charlotte Lomell. The bill highlights Lomell's heroism during key battles such as the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Historian Stephen Ambrose recognized him as pivotal to Allied successes on D-Day.
Lomell's distinguished military career includes earning the Distinguished Service Cross for disabling German heavy guns at Pointe Du Hoc and a Silver Star for actions at Hill 400 during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest.
After his military service, Lomell contributed significantly to his community in Ocean County until his death in 2011. The proposed clinic will replace an older facility that no longer meets demand.
