Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) expressed his concerns over Rutgers University's recent actions in response to antisemitic protests on its New Brunswick campus. In a phone call with Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway, Smith stated, "While we had a productive conversation, I continue to have deep concerns about Rutgers’ recent action given their egregious history of antisemitism and its failure to protect Jewish students."
Smith also mentioned that he looks forward to further engagement with President Holloway, especially when Holloway testifies before Congress later this month. Smith emphasized the importance of Holloway providing insights and explanations as part of Congress' aggressive investigation into antisemitism on college campuses.
Regarding the demands issued by the protest organizers, Smith highlighted the importance of Rutgers combating antisemitic threats against Jewish students on campus. He stated, "Rutgers must absolutely commit to combat the antisemitic threats that have been escalating against Jewish students on campus."
A letter sent to Rutgers informing them of the congressional investigation emphasized the intensity and pervasiveness of antisemitism on the university's campuses. The letter pointed out that Rutgers-Newark's Center for Security, Race and Rights (CSRR) has been known for activities that are antisemitic, anti-American, anti-Israel, and pro-terrorist in nature.
Smith noted that Rutgers has submitted approximately 80,000 pages in response to the congressional investigation, but he mentioned that the majority of them have not provided significant insights thus far. Smith's concerns reflect the ongoing efforts to address antisemitism and ensure the safety of Jewish students on college campuses.
