FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH!

February is American Heart Month! This year, we’re focusing on "getting to know #OurHearts." Being smart about your heart health means knowing what causes heart disease and understanding your individual risk factors.

About 660,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. every year – that’s one in every four deaths.

Risk Factors Some conditions, as well as some lifestyle factors, can put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. All persons can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing the following risk factors: • High blood pressure • Diabetes mellitus • Tobacco use • Diet • Physical inactivity • Obesity • Alcohol.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. In the United States, the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attack. You can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease through lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medicine.
