Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who serves as Co-Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China and is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, appeared on EWTN News In Depth with host Catherine Hadro to discuss the ongoing imprisonment of Jimmy Lai. Lai, a pro-democracy advocate and media entrepreneur from Hong Kong, remains detained by local authorities under charges described as fraudulent and politically motivated by Smith.

During the interview, Smith highlighted that Lai, 77, faces harsh prison conditions and extended periods in solitary confinement while awaiting judgment in his latest trial. “Smith, who has chaired congressional hearings and authored legislation to bring scrutiny to this grave injustice, again called for Lai’s immediate release and expressed deep appreciation for President Trump’s renewed efforts to secure Lai’s freedom.” The full interview is available online.

Chris Smith has represented New Jersey’s 4th district in Congress since 1981 after succeeding Frank Thompson. He was born in Rahway, New Jersey in 1953 and currently resides in Manchester Township. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree from The College of New Jersey in 1975.
