Congressman Chris Smith has issued a statement regarding the passing of Pope Francis. He expressed his solidarity with people around the world, saying: “My wife, Marie, and I join all people of good will in praying that eternal rest be granted to His Holiness Pope Francis.”

Pope Francis was noted for his efforts to advise politicians across all faiths to prioritize the common good and focus on “the defense of the life of those that are about to be born and make their entrance in society, to which they bring novelty, a future and hope.”

In light of this transitional period for the Roman Catholic Church, as a new successor is chosen, Rep. Smith has also voiced his hopes for peace and divine guidance. “We pray for peace, wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit during this time of transition in the Roman Catholic Church as his successor is selected,” he added.
