U.S. Representative Chris Smith has reintroduced the bipartisan legislation known as the “Jimmy Lai Way Act,” aimed at renaming the street in front of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Washington, DC, to “1 Jimmy Lai Way.” The bill, named after the imprisoned entrepreneur and advocate of democracy, honors Lai who is currently on trial under National Security Law charges.
Smith, alongside Representatives Tom Suozzi, John Moolenaar, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, is spearheading the initiative. The legislation signals support for those in Hong Kong detained for exercising rights promised by the Chinese Communist Party. “By renaming the street in honor of Jimmy Lai, we show solidarity and offer our continued support for this champion of democracy and human rights,” Smith commented.
Representatives expressed strong support for the move, citing concerns over Hong Kong’s political climate. Moolenaar stated, “Honoring Jimmy Lai is a powerful statement of our unwavering commitment to those who courageously stand up for freedom and democracy.” Krishnamoorthi added, “More than four years ago, Jimmy Lai, a champion of press freedom and democracy, was unjustly imprisoned.”
Suozzi reiterated, “Naming a street in our nation’s capital after Jimmy Lai sends a clear message to the world: the United States stands in solidarity with freedom fighters who oppose authoritarianism and repression.”
Over 1,500 political prisoners are currently detained in Hong Kong, highlighting continuing human rights concerns. Smith has nominated Lai for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, alongside other notable figures, with Senator Jeff Merkley joining in the nominations.
