As the world observes the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Congressman Chris Smith, a prominent U.S. human rights advocate, has called on global legislators to reconsider the impact of what he describes as a radical abortion agenda. He urges a shift towards valuing life, reinforcing family structures, and respecting human dignity.

“Thirty years ago, the Beijing Declaration was hailed as a landmark moment for gender equality, but advocates with an agenda used it to push abortion as an international right,” said Smith.

Smith emphasized that “the document itself contains no such right,” noting that it states any changes to abortion laws should be determined at national or local levels through legislative processes.

Smith, who co-chairs The House Pro-life Caucus, argued that some NGOs and foreign governments have misappropriated this non-binding document over the past three decades. He claims they have pressured nations—particularly those with pro-life stances—to change their laws in ways that disregard citizens’ deeply held beliefs.

“Genuine health care and human rights are life affirming and do not come at the expense of the unborn,” Smith stated. He advocates for policies that enhance maternal and child health while respecting both mother and child’s dignity.

“For three decades, the international abortion lobby has misused the Beijing Declaration to undermine the fundamental right to life and erode the foundation of the family,” Smith asserted. He calls on leaders worldwide to resist this agenda and promote policies safeguarding life at all stages.
