Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has issued a statement following the release of Edan Alexander, an American held hostage by Hamas. Alexander’s return marks the end of 19 months in captivity.
Smith expressed relief over Alexander’s imminent reunion with his family, stating, “I am relieved to know Edan Alexander, an American from New Jersey, will soon be reunited with his family—including his mother Yael and father Adi Alexander—who relentlessly advocated for his release over these heartbreaking 19 months.”
The congressman attributed the release to efforts led by former President Trump and members of his administration. He remarked on their commitment: “The long-overdue release of Edan Alexander is a direct result of the hands-on approach to prioritizing the interests of the American people pursued by President Trump, Secretary Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Ambassador Mike Huckabee, and the rest of the Trump Administration diligently working to represent the American people both at home and abroad.”
Smith also acknowledged Israel’s role in ensuring safe passage for Alexander amid challenging security conditions. He stated appreciation for their support: “I sincerely thank the Israeli government for their assistance in securing safe passage home for Edan amid a complex security environment.”
Looking forward, Smith emphasized collaboration with Trump and Secretary Rubio to promote global peace beneficial to America and its allies. He noted his intent to continue supporting efforts aimed at bringing wrongly detained Americans back home.
