U.S. Congressman Chris Smith, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, has emphasized the critical need to establish a War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court in Liberia. Smith highlighted the long-standing suffering of the Liberian people, stating, “In recent decades, Liberia’s people have suffered untold human rights violations and economic crimes while perpetrators acted with near-complete impunity during the country’s multiple civil wars.”

Smith also referenced President Joseph Boakai's commitment to establishing the court, noting that Boakai had repeatedly emphasized the importance of such a judicial body during his presidential campaign. Smith quoted Boakai's inaugural address, where the President committed to pursuing the establishment of a court to hold individuals accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The Congressman stressed the significance of delivering justice and accountability to the people of Liberia, stating, "There must be justice and accountability for the people of Liberia. Establishing the promised War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court is a necessary, critical step for assuring lasting peace and the people’s confidence in the rule of law and the fair administration of justice in their country."

Smith also highlighted the international community's anticipation for the establishment of the court, including the United States. He mentioned that the U.S. Congress is closely monitoring the progress of the court's formation as a means to promote good governance and healing in Liberia.

The establishment of a War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court in Liberia is seen as a crucial step towards addressing past atrocities, ensuring accountability, and fostering a culture of justice and peace in the nation.
