The Manchester Township Police Department is set to receive an infusion of $1.1 million to bolster its staffing and replace its aging police vehicles.
"This federal support will enable the Manchester Police Department to continue delivering critical emergency and law enforcement services to a geographically large municipality," said Rep. Chris Smith in announcing the congressional earmark.
Because Manchester is home to portions of Naval Air Station Lakehurst, "the town’s police department is required to be prepared for emergency response in support of base activities," Smith added.
Manchester Mayor Robert Arace expressed gratitude for the funding, stating, "We are very thankful to Chris Smith’s office for their support and assistance."
Smith highlighted the importance of the funding by mentioning that Manchester encompasses 85 square miles, with areas prone to inclement weather and heavy wear and tear on patrol vehicles, compromising emergency response capabilities.
Regarding a statement referencing a reduction in police staffing and a potential budget shortfall, Manchester officials clarified, "This funding is intended for police fleet upgrades and to help stabilize the emergency services budget to keep Manchester affordable while being able to deliver critical services."
The news release from Smith's office emphasized that the funding is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of the Manchester Township Police Department.
