The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County in Wall Township is set to receive $1,200,000 in federal funding for a major renovation and revitalization project at its Camp Zehnder program, thanks to the efforts of Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester).

The project, championed by Rep. Smith, aims to expand childcare services for low-income and moderate-income working families in the area. Rep. Smith highlighted the importance of the YMCA's childcare facilities during the summer months, providing essential services for families and enabling parents to maintain year-round employment.

Speaking about the project, Rep. Smith emphasized, “This revitalization plan will not only create jobs but also expand community programs for children and families, allowing the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County to serve almost twice as many individuals and provide new and increased offerings and services.”

The $1.2 million funding secured by Rep. Smith is the first phase of a larger $4.35 million capital improvement and modernization plan. The project has garnered significant support from local social service agencies, as well as from various levels of government officials.

The renovation project will address critical needs at Camp Zehnder, including the installation of a commercial-grade generator for safety during severe weather and power outages. Additionally, the funds will be used to construct and repair buildings on-site to provide adequate shelter for campers during inclement weather, effectively doubling the number of families that can benefit from the summer camp programs.

Beyond childcare services, the camp facility also offers year-round mental health counseling and a substance abuse Intensive Outpatient Program. Rep. Smith highlighted the importance of these services, stating, “By having accessible and affordable mental health professionals at their local YMCA, barriers will be removed for children and families to seek the support they need.”

The comprehensive renovation and revitalization project at Camp Zehnder represent a significant investment in the community, aiming to enhance services and facilities for families in need.
